(COLOMBO) – Popular Sri Lankan actress Damitha Abeyratne and her husband were arrested on Thursday in connection with their alleged involvement in a financial scam, police said.
They said the pair was picked up by sleuths from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) after they surrendered at magistrate’s court in the commercial capital of Colombo.
The actress and her husband were persons of interest in a police probe into an alleged financial scam where the couple is alleged to have accepted Rs.3 million from an individual as a fee with the promise of lucrative employment in S. Korea, according to police.
A Court recently rejected a writ petition filed seeking to prevent their arrest, while a Magistrate imposed an overseas travel ban on the couple on Wednesday.
Speaking to the media at the court’s premises, Abeyaratne said: “I was not in hiding. Damitha is not someone who can hide in this country; she is a woman who fought against the corrupt system that garnered 69 lakh votes. Today, I surrender to the court. I will also celebrate the New Year in prison.”
