(COLOMBO) – A 31-year-old Sri Lankan Excise officer was arrested after he is alleged to have sung a distorted version of a popular New Year National song and later shared it on social media, police said on Wednesday.
The country celebrated the National New Year on April 12 and 13 and the suspect is alleged to have sung and shared the distorted song on social media during this period, they said.
The Police Computer and Crime Investigation Division were called in to probe the incident after complaints were made to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon to look into the matter at the very earliest.
The suspect was picked up at his regional office in Kuliyapitiya some 82 kilometres from the commercial capital of Colombo.
The New Year song is titled ‘Soorya Mangalya’ and sung by Rohana Beddage a famous artiste from the majority Sinhalese community in the country.
