In the wake of the tragic accident at the Fox Hill Supercross event, which resulted in the loss of seven lives, Sri Lanka General Insurance has affirmed its commitment to supporting the victims’ families beyond conventional expectations. The event, which stands as the most severe accident in the history of Sri Lankan motor racing, occurred last Sunday and was organized by the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa, and the Sri Lanka Association of Motor Sports (SLAS).
Priyantha Perera, COO of Sri Lanka General Insurance, emphasized the company’s dedication as the official insurance provider for the event. He assured that all claims related to the fatalities would be honored promptly. “This is a huge tragedy that should not have occurred, and we are profoundly sorry for the deceased. We will go out of the way to provide ‘some kind of comfort’ to their next of kin by offering the best possible death insurance remuneration,” Perera stated.
Despite the typical insurance coverage for pedestrian fatalities in motor accidents being capped at Rs. 500,000, Perera noted that the circumstances for spectators are different. “However, as a leading and responsible insurance company, Sri Lanka Insurance will offer the best death cover claim to them,” he added.
While the insurance coverage does not extend to spectators currently receiving medical treatment, the commitment to the deceased’s families is clear. About 20 individuals are hospitalized, with two in intensive care, raising concerns about the costs of ongoing medical care. The organizers and the Sri Lanka Army have stepped up, making funeral arrangements and pledging additional financial support between Rs. 500,000 to Rs. one million for the families of the deceased.
This robust response from Sri Lanka General Insurance not only provides critical support to those affected but also reinforces the company’s role as a pillar of responsibility and care in the community. It highlights their commitment to going beyond the basics of insurance provision, ensuring that the families affected by this tragedy receive comprehensive support during this challenging time.
