(COLOMBO) – At least 33 persons, including 25 school children were injured in a motor accident in South-Eastern Sri Lanka on Friday afternoon, police said.
They said the incident took place in Akkaraipattu some 373 kilometres from the commercial capital of Colombo.
The accident involved two passengers coaches one belonging to the State and the other private-owned that crashed on the Akkaraipattu-Ampara Road.
The injured were being treated at nearby hospitals and their conditions were not life-threatening, according to police and hospital officials.
Initial investigations have revealed that both vehicles were moving at excessive speed when the accident took place.
The school children were returning home on the final day of the first term of school sessions before the holidays begin on May 6.
