(COLOMBO) – An enraged 32-year-old woman was arrested for the alleged murder of her two month old infant at a residence in North-Western Sri Lanka, police said on Friday.
They said the woman had forcibly drowned the child after she allegedly threw the toddler into a deep well at a location in Kandakudawa, Kalpitiya some 168 kilometers from the commercial capital of Colombo.
Initial investigations have revealed that the child had been suffering from a prolonged illness since birth and the woman was depressed since her husband lacked to provide proper care for them.
Police were summoned to the scene by alert neighbours after the lifeless body of the infant was found floating in the well.
The police are seeking to question the woman’s husband who has since left the village.
Police quoted neighbours as saying that there were constant quarrels between the couple over the child’s dwindling health and misfortune experienced by the family.
