(COLOMBO) – Five Sri Lankan policemen have been suspended from service for allegedly allowing a suspect to smoke cannabis inside the holding cell at a police station.
The policemen included three sergeants and two constables and the alleged incident took place at the Beliatte Police Station situated some 196 kilometres south off the commercial capital of Colombo.
The policemen were attached to the same police station.
The suspect was taken into custody after 50 grams of cannabis was found on his possession, a senior police official said.
Investigators also found two ‘ready to smoke’ cannabis cigars and a lighter in the suspect’s possession while he was in the cell.
Beliatte is a hot spot for locally cultivated cannabis which is known locally as ganja.
The five policemen have been grounded with immediate effect until the investigations are completed, according to the senior official.
