George Steuart & Co. Ltd. (GS&Co), the oldest company in Sri Lanka, established in 1835, is poised for a new phase of growth with strategic leadership changes. Sarva Ameresekere has been appointed as the Group Chairman following the resignation of Dilith Jayaweera, who has shifted his focus to national politics. Jayaweera, together with partners Varuni Amunugama Fernando and Ameresekere, acquired GS&Co in 2011, steering the company through expansive growth. GS&Co now operates across diverse sectors such as tea exports, healthcare, travel, leisure, financial services, FMCG, and industrial solutions.
The Board of GS&Co has been fortified with the appointment of three independent directors: Devaka Cooray, an expert in finance and assurance formerly with Ernst & Young; Dimantha Seneviratne, a seasoned banker and former CEO of NDB Bank; and Dr. Dinesh Palipana OAM, an Australian-based doctor, lawyer, and equality advocate. These new members join a dynamic team including industry stalwarts Varuni Amunugama Fernando, Dai Pathmanathan, Eran Ranasinghe, and IT specialist Manoj Pilimatalawwe, ensuring a broad spectrum of expertise at the board level.
Sarva Ameresekere, who first joined the GS&Co board in 2020 as Group Executive Director and has since served across various board positions within the group, including its listed entities, brings a deep understanding of business and engineering from his studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. His leadership at the Triad Group since 2008 further equips him to guide GS&Co toward global ambitions and a bold future.
