A significant engineer shortage at the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) was disclosed during a recent Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) meeting. According to Deputy Managing Director Mr. Palitha Perera, the CEB currently has 330 unfilled engineering positions, exacerbated by the departure of 130 engineers last year and in the first four months of this year.
The shortage has arisen due to a lack of recruitment to replace retired engineers. During the COPE meeting, it was also revealed that the CEB has faced substantial financial losses due to emergency power purchases, which were necessary because of a missed opportunity to acquire the Ace Power Station.
