(COLOMBO) – A Sri Lankan court on Wednesday remanded a 45-year-old man and two female accomplices in connection with a brutal assault of a four-year-old boy, an incident that sparked-off public outrage after the horrific incident went viral on social media platforms.
The Padaviya Magistrate’s Court ordered the suspects to be held in remand custody until June 19.
The suspects were picked up from a safe house at Pulmodai some 328 kilometers north of the commercial capital of Colombo two days after the alleged incident.
A grab from social media video shows the suspect who was having a meal repeatedly beating the child for unexplained reasons.
It was also not clear if the child was his own or otherwise but the film clearly shows two women standing helplessly as the man goes on to attack the minor.
According to police the suspect is also believed to have beaten the child on several earlier occasions but neighbours and other family members failed to report the matter to the authorities owing to fear of reprisals from the man.
