(COLOMBO) – A 22-year-old female private university student was jailed for one month after she made a fabricated claim of rape against her lover, police said on Thursday.
Police informed the court that following the complaint her lover was placed in remand custody for 14 days thereby misusing the authority of State officers to aggrieve an individual.
Investigators found out that the student had been in love with the suspect and had cooked up the rape story after their affair became known to her parents.
She also told her parents that the suspect was not her lover, the court was told.
An official from the Women and Children’s Bureau, submitted to court that the statements made by the accused student against the aggrieved party. They were proven to be false and therefore it was a punishable offense committed under Section 180 of the Penal Code.
The magistrate, who upheld the submissions of the police, sentenced the accused to one month imprisonment.
