Billionaire John Caudwell, a major donor to the Conservative Party, has announced he will vote Labour for the first time in his life next month. Caudwell, the founder of Phones 4U, expressed his dissatisfaction with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, labeling him an “absolute dud.” He praised Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer for resonating with his views on various issues.Despite his earlier criticisms of Labour’s plan to impose VAT on private school fees, Caudwell now believes Labour is the best choice for Britain’s future, highlighting their focus on GDP growth and environmental issues. He stated, “Without GDP growth you can’t look after your social services. And without focusing on the environment there won’t be a world to look after.”Caudwell dismissed the idea of supporting Nigel Farage’s Reform UK, citing disagreements with their climate change stance. While he has not committed to financially supporting Labour, he hasn’t ruled it out, suggesting it could happen if he feels Labour performs exceptionally.Reflecting on his previous support for the Conservatives, Caudwell explained his past aversion to a Corbyn-led government and praised Starmer for moving Labour away from what he described as the “loony Left” towards wealth creation.Caudwell also criticized Sunak’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly the furlough scheme, which he believes was mismanaged, showing a “complete lack of judgement.”After meeting with Starmer and former Prime Minister Tony Blair earlier this year, and following the release of Labour’s manifesto, Caudwell expressed confidence in supporting Labour. Starmer welcomed Caudwell’s endorsement, viewing it as a sign of Labour’s positive transformation under his leadership.
