India kicked off their Super Eight campaign in the T20 World Cup 2024 with a commanding victory over Afghanistan in Bridgetown. Despite a challenging pitch, Suryakumar Yadav’s stellar batting and Jasprit Bumrah’s exceptional bowling led India to a 47-run win.
India posted a competitive total of 181 for 8, thanks to Suryakumar Yadav’s 53 runs. Afghanistan struggled in their chase, managing only 134, with Bumrah’s early strikes dismantling their lineup. Rashid Khan was the standout bowler for Afghanistan, taking 3 for 26, but his efforts were in vain as the Afghan batters faltered against India’s attack.
Veteran players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma returned to the squad, aiming for World Cup glory. Although Rohit made only 8 off 13 balls and Kohli fell attempting a big hit, their presence signaled India’s intent to play aggressively. This new approach paid off, as India’s middle-order quickly recovered, pushing the score up by 18 runs within six balls after Kohli’s dismissal.
Suryakumar Yadav’s innings was a masterclass in adaptability, using sweeps, smashes, and swipes to navigate the tricky pitch. His strategic hitting, particularly a jaw-dropping drag shot off Azmatullah Omarzai, showcased his skill and precision.
Jasprit Bumrah, continuing his brilliant form, struck off his second ball and finished with remarkable figures of 3 for 7. His ability to adapt quickly to the conditions, using slower balls and wide lines, cemented his status as an all-format great. Other Indian bowlers also contributed significantly, with Kuldeep Yadav taking 2 for 32, Axar Patel starting with a wicket-maiden, and Arshdeep Singh nearly achieving a hat-trick.
The victory was further bolstered by a social media tribute from Anil Kumble, expressing his condolences for the late David Johnson, a former Indian cricketer who passed away recently.
With this win, India set a strong tone for the rest of their Super Eight campaign, demonstrating a balanced approach of aggressive batting and strategic bowling.
