* Biden confident he could trump his opponent
* Time and how to watch – details below
When President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump face off in tonight’s presidential debate, it will be a replay of 2020 but under much different circumstances in 2024.
Hosted by CNN, this debate is critical as undecided voters decide how to cast their ballots in what’s expected to be a close contest in November. It also provides Biden and Trump an opportunity to present their visions for the United States.
The debate is set for 90 minutes with two commercial breaks and will feature no live studio audience, a significant change from previous debates.
How to Watch
CNN will simulcast the debate on additional broadcast and cable news networks in the U.S., including ABC and ABC News Live, with pre-debate coverage starting at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC and 7 p.m. EDT on ABCNL. The debate will be moderated by CNN anchors Jake Tapper and Dana Bash and will air at 9 p.m. EDT/8 p.m. CDT/6 p.m. PDT. It will also stream live on CNN.com without requiring a cable login.
Debate Rules
Both candidates have agreed to stand at lecterns with microphones muted when it’s not their turn to speak, to minimize interruptions. They will not be allowed props or pre-written notes but will have paper, pens, and water. Campaign staff will not be allowed to interact with them during the debate.
Debate Format
There will be no opening statements. Each candidate will have two minutes to answer the moderators’ questions, followed by one minute for rebuttals. A flashing red light will warn them when they have five seconds left.
Context and Controversies
This debate is the earliest ever in a presidential race, taking place before the Republican and Democratic conventions. Both candidates now have one presidential term under their belts, adding new dimensions to their debate strategies. Trump’s recent legal troubles and Biden’s job approval ratings are expected to be major talking points.
What’s Next?
This is the first of two debates agreed upon by Biden and Trump. The next debate will be hosted by ABC News on September 10.
