Senior Additional Solicitor General Parinda Ranasinghe has been sworn in as the Acting Attorney General before the Chief Justice, according to an Ada Derana report.
This appointment follows the Constitutional Council’s second rejection of a proposal to extend the term of the current Attorney General, Sanjay Rajaratnam, by six months. The proposal, submitted by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, was defeated with 5 votes against and 3 in favor.
Rajaratnam’s term is set to expire at the end of this month. With the Constitutional Council twice rejecting the extension proposal, the position of Acting Attorney General has been filled by Parinda Ranasinghe, son of former Chief Justice K. A. Parinda Ranasinghe.
