The fifth edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) T20 Cricket Tournament commenced with much fanfare at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy.
The vibrant opening ceremony was marked by Sri Lanka Women’s Team Captain Chamari Atapattu flagging off the event. Former Australian World Cup-winning Captain Michael Clarke, who is the Brand Ambassador of the LPL, also participated in the festivities, alongside players from all five franchise teams, including their captains.
Wanindu Hasaranga, Captain of the reigning champions Kandy Falcons, ceremoniously handed over the LPL Trophy to Clarke.
Among the dignitaries present were President of Sri Lanka Cricket Shammi Silva, LPL Tournament Director Samantha Dodanwela, and other SLC office bearers.
The tournament began on a high note as the Kandy Falcons defended their title in spectacular fashion, securing a decisive victory over the Dambulla Sixers. Chasing a target of 179, the Falcons achieved 183 for 4 in just 17.2 overs. Despite early setbacks with Andre Fletcher and Haris falling quickly, Dinesh Chandimal’s aggressive 65 in the Powerplay set a solid foundation. Although Chandimal’s innings was cut short, his performance was crucial in keeping the Falcons on track.
Dasun Shanaka, who was instrumental with the ball earlier, picking up 3 for 20, continued his form with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 46. Alongside Angelo Mathews, who contributed an unbeaten 37, Shanaka ensured the Falcons dominated the latter stages of the match, finishing the chase with nearly three overs to spare.
Earlier in the game, the Falcons’ bowlers had a mixed performance. While Dasun Shanaka was exceptional, Mohammad Hasnain struggled, conceding 53 runs for his solitary wicket. However, the Falcons managed to restrict the Sixers to 179 for 4, thanks to Shanaka’s disciplined bowling. Chamindu Wickramasinghe and Mark Chapman stood out for the Sixers, remaining unbeaten with 62 and 91 runs respectively, but their efforts fell short against the Falcons’ formidable batting lineup.
In the end, the Falcons’ ability to recover from early losses and capitalize on key moments showcased their champion mentality. Dasun Shanaka’s all-round performance earned him the Player of the Match award, highlighting his crucial role in both the bowling and batting departments. With this win, the Kandy Falcons have sent a strong message to their competitors, reaffirming their position as the team to beat in the tournament.
