In a dramatic turn of events, South Kashmir’s Kulgam district witnessed twin encounters on Saturday, resulting in the elimination of four militants and the tragic loss of one soldier’s life. The clashes erupted after a joint operation by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Army, and Jammu and Kashmir Police targeted militants reportedly holed up in Modergam village.
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, V K Birdhi, confirmed that the encounters were ongoing, with bodies of militants sighted but the operations yet to conclude fully.
The initial exchange of gunfire occurred as security forces established a cordon, leading to injuries among the forces. Regrettably, one soldier succumbed to his injuries at a hospital shortly afterward.
The Kashmir Zone Police updated via social media platform X, stating, “Encounter started at Modergam Village of Kulgam District. Police and Security Forces are on job.” However, a detailed statement on the developments is awaited.
Drones were deployed by security forces to track militants believed to be in hiding, underscoring the intensity and technological measures employed in the operations.
Subsequently, another encounter broke out in Frisal Chinnigam area, approximately 13 km from the initial site. Security forces swiftly responded, continuing the joint operation to neutralize any threats.
The escalation in encounters marks a departure from the relative calm observed in the region, highlighting persistent security challenges despite reduced incidents in recent years.
Director General of Police RR Swain emphasized, “The adversary is attempting to exploit border areas with foreign mercenaries to perpetuate terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.” He reaffirmed the commitment to combat terrorism with collective efforts and community support.
The recent operations follow a pattern of heightened vigilance and response in the face of escalating tensions and security threats in the region.
