Today, police recovered drugs valued at over Rs. 5 million from the rented house of Sahan Dhananjaya, alias “Kona,” a suspected drug trafficker who was shot while fleeing from officers after allegedly pointing a firearm at them.
The sequence of events began when Athurugiriya Police received intelligence that Kona was transporting drugs from Kottawa to Piliyandala on July 4. Acting on this tip-off, police conducted a special traffic inspection at the Friday ‘Pola’ junction in Piliyandala. During the inspection, Kona reportedly exited a stopped vehicle and brandished a firearm at officers, prompting them to open fire. Despite the exchange, Kona managed to escape, leaving behind his bullet-ridden car later found abandoned in the Kesbewa area.
However, Kona was apprehended while seeking medical treatment at Kalubowila Teaching Hospital for a gunshot wound to his leg. Subsequently, Kona and his wife were arrested. Following their interrogation, police searched their rented house in Halpita, Polgasowita, where they discovered various drugs including cocaine, crystal methamphetamine (‘Ice’), and Kerala cannabis, valued at over Rs. 5 million.
Further investigations revealed that Kona had visited the house shortly before the incident. During questioning of Kona’s wife, it was disclosed that the house belonged to “Kalubowila Sudu Nona,” another prominent drug dealer in the Kalubowila area. In response, police arrested Kalubowila Sudu Nona on the same day and seized nearly 9 grams of ‘Ice’ from her possession.
Both women have been remanded for seven days following their appearance at the Kesbewa Magistrate’s Court.
