Chasing a daunting target of 225, the Falcons were led by a spectacular knock from Dinesh Chandimal, who scored a blistering 89 off just 37 balls, setting the stage for a remarkable victory.
The Jaffna Kings, batting first, posted an imposing total of 224 for 7, thanks to an outstanding century from Pathum Nissanka. Nissanka’s 119 off 59 balls was the cornerstone of the Kings’ innings, with significant contributions from Kusal Mendis (26) and Rilee Rossouw (41 off 18). Despite a strong start, the Kings couldn’t maintain their momentum, with Dasun Shanaka (3 for 40) and Ramesh Mendis (2 for 28) providing crucial breakthroughs for the Falcons.
In response, the Falcons lost Andre Fletcher early in the third over but quickly recovered with a solid 58-run partnership between Chandimal and Mohammad Haris (25). Chandimal’s aggressive approach kept the Falcons ahead of the required run rate, while Kamindu Mendis played a mature innings, remaining unbeaten on 65 off 36 balls. Angelo Mathews added the finishing touches with a quick-fire 29, ensuring the Falcons reached the target with 10 balls to spare.
The Jaffna Kings’ bowlers were under pressure from the start, unable to contain the Falcons’ relentless assault. Tabraiz Shamsi picked up 2 wickets but conceded 46 runs, while Pramod Madushan took 1 for 33. Despite their efforts, the Kings couldn’t stop the Falcons’ charge, resulting in their second loss of the season and a slip in the points table.
This victory marked a significant turnaround for the Kandy Falcons, breaking their three-match losing streak. The win was particularly sweet for skipper Wanindu Hasaranga, as his team executed one of the most memorable chases in LPL history.
