(COLOMBO) – The Sri Lankan Government on Wednesday conceded that tracking down Sri Lankans involved in the Ukraine-Russian war was a complicated matter but this doesn’t necessarily mean they are dead,” adding that efforts are ongoing efforts to address and resolve the situation
The Government has received some 464 complaints on Sri Lankans fighting on both sides of the war but this figure could be very much higher and reaching an exact figure could be a challenging task, Sri Lanka’s State Minister of Foreign Affairs Tharaka Balasuriya said.
He added that most of the Sri Lankans were undocumented as they would have travelled to the Ukraine or Russia through a third country such as India or the United Arab Emirates (UAE), thereby making matters even more complicated.
However we are presently examining 464 complaints made by family members, he said.
At least a dozen persons including a retired Army general are currently behind bars for their alleged involvement in recruiting former Sri Lankan soldiers to fight in the Ukraine-Russian conflict as such recruitment remains outlawed by the Government.
