- T20 World Cup discard Avishka Fernando blasts another half century
By Marlon Dale Ferreira
The Jaffna Kings secured a resounding victory over the Colombo Strikers, thanks to a record-breaking century from Rilee Rossouw. Chasing a target of 189, the Kings reached 190 for 3 in just 18.3 overs, with Rossouw’s scintillating 108* off 49 balls leading the way. His knock, the fastest hundred in LPL history, was the cornerstone of the Kings’ successful run chase.
Earlier in the day, the Colombo Strikers posted a competitive total of 188 for 8. Glenn Phillips top-scored with 58, while Angelo Perera contributed 34 before retiring hurt, and Rahmanullah Gurbaz added 27. The Strikers were cruising at 138 for 3 in 13 overs, but the loss of Perera triggered a collapse. They lost four wickets in two overs, and the runs dried up, thanks to disciplined bowling from Azmatullah Omarzai (2 for 31) and Asitha Fernando (2 for 38).
In response, the Kings’ openers fell cheaply, but Rossouw and Avishka Fernando turned the game around with a commanding 120-run partnership. Rossouw’s explosive batting, dealing primarily in sixes, and Fernando’s steady support reduced the required run rate to below 10. Fernando eventually fell for 58, but Rossouw continued his assault, reaching his century and ensuring the Kings’ victory.
The Strikers’ bowlers struggled to contain Rossouw, with questionable tactics and missed opportunities in the field. Dunith Wellalage bowled beautifully in the Powerplay but was not utilized later, and by the time Matheesha Pathirana came on, the game had slipped away. Shadab Khan, held back possibly due to Rossouw’s presence, also couldn’t make an impact.
This victory keeps the Jaffna Kings at the top of the table with 8 points, while the Colombo Strikers will need to reassess their strategies moving forward. Rossouw’s masterclass not only secured the win but also set a new benchmark in LPL cricket.
