* Register a thumping 9 wicket win with over 10 overs to spare
By Marlon Dale Ferreira
The Colombo Strikers delivered a commanding performance to secure a convincing 9-wicket victory over the Jaffna Kings, chasing down a modest target of 109 with ease. This win keeps the Strikers firmly in the playoff race, while the Jaffna Kings, despite already securing a playoff spot, now face an uncertain finish in the top two.
Opting to bowl first, the Strikers executed their game plan flawlessly, restricting the Jaffna Kings to just 109 for 9 in their 20 overs. The Strikers’ bowlers maintained tight control, consistently taking wickets and never allowing the Kings’ batters to settle. Binura Fernando set the tone with the new ball, claiming 2 crucial wickets, while Shadab Khan was exceptional in the middle overs, delivering a stellar spell with figures of 4 for 10. Jaffna’s batters struggled throughout, with Vijayakanth Viyaskanth top-scoring with a modest 25* lower down the order, highlighting their overall lackluster performance.
Chasing 109 was never a daunting task for the Colombo Strikers. They got off to a flying start in the powerplay, with Rahmanullah Gurbaz leading the charge. Gurbaz remained unbeaten on 57*, anchoring the innings with composure, while Mohammad Waseem provided solid support, contributing 35* runs. The Strikers cruised to victory in just 9.5 overs, with Gurbaz and Waseem’s partnership ensuring there were no hiccups along the way. Pramod Madushan was the lone wicket-taker for the Jaffna Kings, but his efforts were not enough to stem the Strikers’ momentum.
This comprehensive victory not only bolsters the Strikers’ playoff aspirations but also serves as a warning to their competitors.
Meanwhile, the Jaffna Kings will need to reassess their strategies to ensure a strong finish in the tournament and secure a top-two spot.
