* Euro 2024 Finals – England vs Spain
By Dwayne Ferreira
Spain has won the UEFA European Championship for the fourth time in history, following their previous victories in 1964, 2008, and 2012. This triumph makes Spain the most successful nation in the competition’s history. The victory came after a dramatic 2-1 win over England in the final, held at EURO 2024. Spain’s dominance in the tournament was clear as they won all seven matches, becoming the first European nation to achieve this feat in a major international tournament, scoring a record 15 goals in the process.
The final saw a late goal from Oyarzabal, giving Spain the decisive edge over England. The first half was cautious, with few significant chances created by either side. However, the second half was action-packed, with Spain’s Williams scoring less than two minutes after the break, becoming the second-youngest goalscorer in a Euros final. England responded through Palmer, who scored just 142 seconds after being substituted in by Gareth Southgate. The match appeared to be heading towards extra time until Oyarzabal’s timely run and finish in the 86th minute secured the victory for Spain.
Despite England’s late attempts to equalize, including a saved header by Rice and a clearance off the line from Guehi, they couldn’t find the back of the net. This loss marks England’s second consecutive defeat in European Championship finals, following their loss to Italy at EURO 2020, extending their long wait for a major trophy.
Spain’s victory at EURO 2024 not only adds to their rich footballing legacy but also demonstrates their resurgence on the international stage after a 12-year gap since their last major trophy. For England, the heartbreak continues as they reflect on missed opportunities and look forward to ending their trophy drought in future tournaments.
