Former Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena, along with several other officials, was ordered by the Supreme Court to pay compensation for their negligence in preventing the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks. By the deadline of July 12, 2023, Sirisena had paid Rs. 15 million of the Rs. 100 million he owed and sought more time to pay the remaining Rs. 85 million. He proposed to pay the balance in ten annual installments starting from June 2024.
In the same case, other officials like former Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara and former Defense Secretary Hemasiri Fernando have made partial payments towards their respective sums.
