The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has approved a substantial reduction in electricity tariffs, effective from midnight today (July 15). Overall, tariffs will decrease by 22.5%. Specifically:
- Domestic consumers using less than 30 units per month will enjoy a 25% reduction, with the unit price dropping from Rs 8 to Rs 6.
- Consumers in the 61 to 90 units consumption bracket will benefit from a 55% reduction, reducing the unit price from Rs 20 to Rs 9.
- Tariffs for religious institutions will be reduced by more than 30%.
- Hotels and minor industries will see a 33% reduction in daytime tariffs, applicable to both low voltage and 33kV systems.
This decision by the PUCSL is aimed at easing financial burdens for households, religious establishments, and businesses, potentially stimulating economic activity.
