*Mohammad Nabi stars in low scoring game – LPL 2024 (Match 20)
In a tournament-defining match, the Dambulla Sixers claimed a 28-run victory over the Colombo Strikers, showcasing their best bowling effort of the tournament. Despite the impressive win, the Sixers missed out on advancing to the next round due to an inferior net run rate compared to the Kandy Falcons. Consequently, the Falcons advance and will play in the Eliminator, while the Sixers’ journey ends here.
Opting to bat first, the Dambulla Sixers managed to post 123 runs before being bowled out in 20 overs. Mohammad Nabi led the scoring with a crucial 40 runs, supported by Chamindu Wickramasinghe’s 26. The Colombo Strikers’ bowlers, led by Binura Fernando (3 for 15) and Dunith Wellalage (2 for 18), kept the Sixers in check, but the total proved to be more challenging than anticipated.
In their chase, the Colombo Strikers stumbled early, losing three quick wickets. Chamindu Wickramasinghe and Nuwan Pradeep were exceptional with the new ball, placing the Strikers on the back foot. Akila Dananjaya and Mohammad Nabi continued the pressure, making it difficult for the Strikers to recover. Despite a fighting 30 from Thisara Perera, the Strikers were bowled out for 95 in 18.1 overs. Nuwan Pradeep (3 for 20) and Wickramasinghe (2 for 13) were instrumental in dismantling the Strikers’ lineup.
The Sixers’ victory, however, was bittersweet as it only served as a consolation. The Colombo Strikers, who suffered their first defeat after two games, missed the opportunity to finish in the top two. Dambulla’s impressive fielding and tight bowling ensured the Strikers fell short, ending their innings 28 runs shy of the target.
