The Lanka Premier League (LPL) has partnered with Sri Lanka Cricket to champion breast cancer awareness through an inspiring CSR initiative. Led by Priyanga De Silva, owner of the Dambulla Sixers franchise, this campaign underscores the crucial role of CSR in sports. By promoting early detection and support for those affected by breast cancer, the LPL leverages its wide reach to make a significant impact. This initiative follows a successful donation to the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital, demonstrating the ongoing commitment of Sri Lanka Cricket to social causes.
Sri Lanka Cricket has begun donating funds to raise awareness about breast cancer through the LPL’s ‘Pink Day’ campaign. During matches, every six, boundary, and wicket triggers a donation to the cause: Rs. 10,000 for a six, Rs. 4,000 for a boundary, and Rs. 6,000 for a wicket. This campaign continues until the last ball of the LPL 2024 finals on July 21, 2024. Launched on July 14, 2024, the ‘Pink Day’ campaign sees players and supporters donning pink to show their support.
Priyanga De Silva’s leadership in this campaign sets a precedent for sports franchises to engage in meaningful social causes. He emphasizes the power of using the LPL platform to reach a broad audience and make a significant impact, illustrating the potential of sports to contribute positively to society. The involvement of Sri Lanka Cricket underscores their dedication to supporting essential health services and community welfare through impactful CSR initiatives. Samantha Dodanwela, LPL Tournament Director, highlights the importance of such projects in bringing awareness to crucial health issues and showcasing the compassionate side of sports.
The LPL’s commitment to CSR projects like this sets an inspiring example for other sports leagues and organizations. The Dambulla Sixers, Galle Marvels, Jaffna Kings, Colombo Strikers, and Kandy Falcons all participate in the ‘Pink Day’ campaign, wearing special pink jerseys and ribbons. Spectators join the campaign by wearing pink as well. The LPL’s support for breast cancer awareness demonstrates the potential of sports to drive positive change and emphasizes the importance of continued efforts in this direction.
