The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Response Forum (SLCERT) has called for detailed reports on 40 government information systems amid concerns over a potential technical error in the software of a U.S.-based cybersecurity provider. Senior Information Security Engineer, Mr. Charuka Damunopola, stated that the reports aim to determine whether these systems operate using Microsoft applications, which may be impacted by the identified software issue.
The urgency stems from reports indicating that four private institutions in Sri Lanka have already been affected. Unofficial sources suggest that two banks may also be experiencing issues. Mr. Damunopola emphasized that a strict investigation is underway to assess the situation thoroughly.
The concern arises from a technical error in the Falcon software developed by CrowdStrike, a prominent cybersecurity firm in the United States. This malfunction has had widespread repercussions, disrupting the operations of banks, airports, and other institutions across various countries.
The Sri Lankan government is taking proactive measures to ensure the security and functionality of its information systems. The examination of these 40 government systems is a critical step in safeguarding national infrastructure and maintaining public trust in digital services.
