COLOMBO — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka has announced measures to ensure the safety of Sri Lankan students residing in Bangladesh, amidst the ongoing unrest in the country.
Overview of the Situation
Approximately 50 Sri Lankan students are currently studying at three universities in Bangladesh. The political and social climate has become increasingly volatile due to student-led protests demanding changes to the government’s job quota system. These protests have escalated, leading to significant clashes between demonstrators and police forces.
Actions Taken by the Sri Lankan Government
In response to the deteriorating situation, the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in Bangladesh has taken proactive steps to address the needs and safety of the students. The High Commissioner personally met with the students and held discussions with university administrations to ensure that appropriate safety measures are in place.
Current Status in Bangladesh
Due to the escalating protests, the Bangladesh government has declared a nationwide curfew. The unrest has resulted in severe casualties, with 105 deaths reported so far. Notably, 52 protesters were killed on the 19th of this month alone, as reported by international media. In an effort to restore order, army troops have been deployed across the country.
Ongoing Protests
Despite the curfew and the deployment of the military, representatives of student unions have pledged to continue their protests. They are demanding the immediate resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, holding her accountable for the deaths of the protesters.
