COLOMBO – July 24, 2024 – Minister Nalin Fernando has announced that the retail price of eggs could be reduced to 40 rupees each. This promise comes as part of efforts to address high egg prices ahead of the festive season.
Fernando indicated that the current reduction of 6 rupees in egg prices is a positive step but stressed that further decreases are necessary. “Eggs have decreased by 6 rupees all at once. I am also receiving reports about it from the Consumer Authority. We are continuing to check,” he said.
The Minister warned that if egg producers do not make additional price reductions, the government will consider importing eggs from India to stabilize the market. “If we cannot get the eggs for even 40 rupees, we will have to import them. Because the festival season starts in December, and cake manufacturers purchase a large quantity of eggs. We must ensure that consumers get eggs at the right price,” Fernando explained.
The move aims to protect consumers during the high-demand festive period and avoid price gouging by local producers. The Minister’s statement underscores the government’s commitment to monitoring and regulating essential food prices to benefit the public.
