COLOMBO – July 24, 2024 – Minister Susil Premajayantha announced today that the cabinet has approved a special monthly allowance of Rs 3000 for pensioners. This decision was made during the cabinet meeting held earlier today.
The special allowance is set to be paid starting from September 2024 and will continue until salary discrepancies within the public service are fully rectified. Minister Premajayantha emphasized that this measure aims to provide immediate relief to pensioners while a more comprehensive solution is being developed.
“A separate committee has been appointed to address the salary disparities in the public service. This committee is tasked with resolving the discrepancies across all fields simultaneously. In the meantime, based on the committee’s recommendations, we have decided to provide an allowance of Rs 3000 to pensioners starting in September. This allowance is intended to support them during this interim period,” Minister Premajayantha stated.
The minister’s announcement brings a welcome relief to pensioners who have been facing financial challenges due to the existing salary discrepancies. The government’s move to provide this allowance reflects its commitment to addressing the concerns of retired public servants while working towards a long-term solution.
