In a significant display of military vigilance, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) scrambled fighter jets to intercept two Russian Tu-95 “Bear” bombers and two Chinese H-6 bombers off the coast of Alaska on July 24. This unprecedented joint patrol by Russian and Chinese bombers marked a notable event just before President Biden’s first public address from the Oval Office since announcing he would not seek re-election.
NORAD’s Public Affairs confirmed that the agency detected, tracked, and intercepted the bombers operating within the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). The interception was carried out by fighter jets from both the United States and Canada, showcasing a coordinated response to the activity in the ADIZ.
“This is the first time Russia and China have flown a joint bomber patrol off Alaska,” reported Fox News correspondent Lucas Tomlinson, underscoring the significance of the event.
The intercepted aircraft remained in international airspace and did not breach American or Canadian sovereign airspace. “This Russian and PRC activity in the Alaska ADIZ is not seen as a threat,” stated NORAD. “NORAD will continue to monitor competitor activity near North America and meet presence with presence.”
The timing of the interception, occurring less than an hour before President Biden’s scheduled address, has raised questions about potential connections. However, no definitive link has been established between the bomber patrol and Biden’s speech.
In his address, President Biden discussed his decision to pass the torch to a “new generation” and reiterated his support for Vice President Kamala Harris in her campaign for the Democratic Party’s nomination. He also highlighted his upcoming efforts to push for Supreme Court reforms during his remaining time in office.
The joint Russian-Chinese bomber patrol and the subsequent interception by NORAD reflect ongoing geopolitical tensions and the critical role of military readiness in ensuring the security of North American airspace.
