Nishantha Anuruddha Weerasinghe, Commissioner General of the Motor Transport Department, announced today that the new ‘fault point system’ for traffic offenses will be implemented within the next three months.
In a media briefing, Weerasinghe explained, “This system will allow for a maximum of 24 demerit points. If drivers accumulate the maximum points, their licenses will be revoked. They will then need to complete driver’s training, pass exams, and obtain a medical certificate to get a new license.”
He added, “The system is not yet in place. We have called for tenders and nine companies have applied. The evaluation process is currently underway. We will inform the public once the system is operational.”
