Colombo, July 26, 2024 — The Ilankai Thamil Arasu Katchchi (ITAK) has announced that it will not field a candidate in the upcoming Presidential Election. M.A. Sumanthiran, a Member of Parliament for the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), confirmed the party’s decision, stating that ITAK will instead engage in discussions with the leading presidential candidates.
Sumanthiran emphasized that while ITAK will not put forward its own candidate, it remains committed to participating in the electoral process by exploring potential collaborations and agreements with other major contenders. The decision reflects ITAK’s strategic approach to leverage its influence in the political landscape without directly competing in the presidential race.
The move comes as a significant development in the lead-up to the election, as it could shape the dynamics of the presidential campaign and influence the alignment of Tamil political interests.
