Sri Lanka has witnessed a significant dengue outbreak in 2024, with the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) reporting 32,183 cases and 13 dengue-related deaths so far this year. The disease has notably impacted several regions across the country.
The Western Province is the most affected, recording 12,786 cases. Within this province, the Colombo District is the hardest hit, with 7,582 cases, followed by the Gampaha District, which has reported 3,452 cases.
In the Northern Province, a total of 4,589 dengue cases have been reported, with the majority (4,020 cases) occurring in the Jaffna District. Additionally, the Sabaragamuwa Province has seen 3,329 cases this year.
The NDCU has emphasized the urgent need for public action to prevent further spread of the disease. Authorities are urging individuals to take preventive measures such as eliminating mosquito breeding sites and using mosquito repellents to protect themselves from dengue fever.
As the outbreak continues to impact communities, the NDCU’s call for increased vigilance and preventive measures is crucial in controlling the spread of dengue and safeguarding public health.
