Sri Lankan Defence Secretary General Kamal Gunaratne has formally requested Myanmar’s Prime Minister and Chairman of the State Administration Council (SAC), Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, to assist in the rescue of Sri Lankans held captive in Myanmar. The individuals are reportedly being forced into criminal activities at a cyber criminal camp operated by a terrorist group.
The appeal was made during a meeting on the sidelines of the 4th BIMSTEC National Security Chiefs’ meeting. The Myanmar Prime Minister assured General Gunaratne of the government’s commitment to cooperate and prioritize the resolution of the issue, emphasizing a cooperative approach to addressing the matter.
During their discussion, both leaders reviewed the strong bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Myanmar, covering various aspects including diplomatic ties, religious affairs, and mutual cooperation. They also discussed the exchange of trainees and collaborative efforts to enhance economic development.
The meeting highlighted ongoing and future collaborations, including Myanmar’s role in hosting the 4th BIMSTEC National Security Chiefs’ meeting and its active participation with other member states. The Defence Secretary’s appeal underscores the urgent need for international cooperation to address security and humanitarian concerns affecting Sri Lankan nationals abroad.
