COLOMBO (29) — Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe has resigned from his role as Minister of Justice, Prisons Affairs, and Constitutional Reforms to pursue a candidacy in the upcoming presidential election.
At a press conference in Colombo today, Rajapakshe announced his decision to step down, citing his intention to run for President. He clarified that he would not be contesting under the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) but rather from another alliance.
Rajapakshe noted that no current SLPP cabinet member has declared their intention to run for the presidency, and he confirmed discussions with the President about his decision. “I have stated that I am not running for the Presidential Election from the SLPP, but another alliance,” Rajapakshe said. “The President also asked me regarding the matter. Accordingly, I decided to step down from the ministerial position to contest for the upcoming Presidential Election.”
