COLOMBO (29) — The Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) has formally notified the National Election Commission (NEC) about a potential violation of election regulations involving government nurses participating in a National People’s Power (NPP) event while in uniform.
According to CaFFE, nurses attended the National All Ceylon Nurses’ Conference, held on Sunday under the leadership of NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in their official uniforms. CaFFE contends that this use of state-provided uniforms for political purposes breaches both the Establishments Code and election regulations.
The People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) has also lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission regarding the matter, asserting that the involvement of uniformed nurses in political activities contravenes election laws.
In response to these allegations, a meeting was convened today between the country’s security chiefs and Election Commission officials. The discussion, attended by Secretary of Public Security Viyani Gunathilaka and Chief of Defence Staff General Shavendra Silva, addressed the concerns raised and sought to ensure adherence to election regulations.
