COLOMBO (29) — State Minister of Finance Shehan Semasinghe has announced that vehicle import restrictions will be relaxed beginning in August. The move will initially allow the import of vehicles necessary for business and transportation purposes.
Semasinghe stated, “A government cannot lead the country back to the point of imposing import restrictions by asking for this election. At that time, all other restrictions were eased except for vehicles. Regarding the easing of vehicle restrictions, the government’s position as of August is to remove import restrictions on vehicles in stages.”
The minister outlined that the first phase will focus on vehicles required for business activities and transportation. Importing vehicles for private use is anticipated to commence in the first quarter of 2025.
