Minister of Finance Ranjith Siyambalapitiya announced an increase in the interim allowance for public service pensioners. Starting in September, the allowance will be raised by Rs. 3,000, bringing the total to Rs. 5,500.
Following President’s directives, an expert committee led by U. R. Senevirathne was established to address salary disparities among public servants. Siyambalapitiya explained that the interim allowance will be provided until a revised salary structure is introduced in 2025.
The State Minister highlighted that the government will face an additional expenditure of Rs. 8.4 billion to cover this allowance for approximately 700,000 retired public servants in 2024. Despite budgetary constraints, the government has implemented this interim measure to offer immediate relief to retired employees amid current financial challenges.
