The Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing for August 9 to consider a petition filed by former Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Shani Abeysekera, requesting increased protection due to a perceived threat to his life.
Notices have been issued to the respondents, including former IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon and Defence Secretary Kamal Gunaratne, requiring their appearance in court on that date.
The petition was reviewed by a three-judge bench comprising Justices Vijith Malalgoda, Murdu Fernando, and Yasantha Kodagoda. During the proceedings, President’s Counsel Upul Jayasuriya, representing Abeysekera, revealed concerns about a potential conspiracy to assassinate his client through a staged car accident. Jayasuriya argued that the current security arrangements are inadequate and requested enhanced protection to ensure Abeysekera’s safety.
The court has instructed that the respondents, including the National Police Commission and the Defence Secretary, present their responses on August 9, 2024.
