The Pentagon is deploying an additional fighter squadron and more warships to the Middle East to bolster defense capabilities for Israel in response to the assassination of Hamas’ top political leader in Tehran. Iran has accused Israel of orchestrating the attack, prompting fears of potential Iranian military retaliation.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered the USS Abraham Lincoln to replace the USS Theodore Roosevelt, which was on a short-term deployment in the region. The Abraham Lincoln will ensure a sustained carrier presence, enhancing defense support and readiness.
This move follows President Joe Biden’s recent pledge to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for increased US military deployments. The Pentagon’s adjustments aim to boost US force protection, support Israel’s defense, and prepare for various potential threats.
The Pentagon also announced the deployment of additional ballistic missile defense-capable cruisers and destroyers to both the U.S. European and Central Command regions. Increased readiness for land-based ballistic missile defense is also being implemented.
The recent assassinations of senior figures from Hamas and Hezbollah have raised concerns that Iranian retaliation could lead to a wider regional conflict. The new deployments are designed to deter further escalation and assist Israel, recalling a similar situation last April when Iran’s missile barrage was met with defensive measures from Israeli systems and US fighter jets.
The USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group will maintain a continuous carrier presence in the region, potentially replacing the Roosevelt before its deployment ends. Currently, six US Navy destroyers are stationed in the Middle East, with possible redeployment through the Suez Canal to the Eastern Mediterranean as part of these new orders.
In addition, the USS Wasp amphibious assault ship and two other amphibious ships carrying 2,200 Marines from the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit are positioned in the eastern Mediterranean. These forces are prepared for the evacuation of US personnel if needed.
