The International Cricket Council (ICC) has formally charged Sri Lankan cricketer Praveen Jayawickrama with multiple violations of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code. The specific charges are:
- Article 2.4.4 – Jayawickrama is accused of failing to report, without undue delay, an approach he received to engage in fixing future international matches. This article emphasizes the obligation of players to disclose any approaches aimed at influencing match outcomes.
- Article 2.4.4 – He is also charged with not reporting an approach where he was asked to influence another player on behalf of a corrupter during the 2021 Lanka Premier League. This breach pertains to failing to report attempts to recruit others into corruption.
- Article 2.4.7 – Jayawickrama is accused of obstructing the investigation by deleting messages related to corrupt offers and approaches, hindering the anti-corruption unit’s ability to gather evidence and conduct a thorough investigation.
The charges, which include violations linked to both international matches and the Lanka Premier League, have led to a coordinated response by Sri Lanka Cricket and the ICC. Under Articles 1.7.4.1 and 1.8.1 of the Code, actions regarding the Lanka Premier League charges will be taken alongside those related to international matches.
Jayawickrama has been given a period of 14 days, starting from August 6, 2024, to respond to these charges. The ICC has indicated that no further comments will be made at this stage regarding the ongoing proceedings.
