Concerned about Dilith Jayaweera’s rising popularity as the presidential election approaches next month, certain political factions have begun spreading false information to undermine their rivals. The latest example involves a fake letter in Sinhala circulating on social media, falsely claiming that Jayaweera, the presidential candidate for the Sarvajana Balaya political alliance, has announced he will withdraw from the election scheduled for September 21, 2024.
A member of the Mawbima Janatha Party told The Morning Telegraph, “Dilith Jayaweera’s Presidential Election Campaign is progressing well, and we expect a significant turnout at our rally in Kurunegala where Dilith will be on stage tomorrow. Ultimately, any news is beneficial, and it’s reassuring to gauge our opponents’ reactions to the growing momentum and popularity of our campaign. Those who are fearful of the momentum we have gained so far are the ones capable of doing such things.”
It has been suggested that the rumor originated from the fact that Dilith Jayaweera, the presidential candidate from the Sarvajana Balaya political alliance, has only made his deposit and has not yet submitted his nomination to the Election Commission.
The deadline for nominations is August 15th 2024. At present, 27 candidates have registered for the Presidential Election, with the submission deadline nearing.
The Sarvajana Balaya’s next political rally is scheduled to begin in Kurunegala at 2:30 PM on August 10, 2024.
