(COLOMBO) – At least five persons were killed including an infant and four others injured in two separate road accidents during the past 24 hours in Sri Lanka, police said on Tuesday.
Two persons died instantly while another was seriously injured when a State operated passenger bus lost control and slammed into a wayside shop at Kesbewa close to the commercial capital of Colombo on Monday afternoon, police said on Tuesday.
A female bystander suffered serious injuries and is currently being treated at a local Government hospital.
The driver of the bus was subsequently arrested for negligent driving and was to be produced before a local Magistrate on Tuesday.
Meanwhile three persons including an infant were killed and three others injured after the three-wheeler they were travelling in had crashed into a lorry parked on the roadside in the Wewaldeniya area some 56 kilometers from Colombo.
Police said the accident is believed to have occurred after the driver of the three-wheeler had fallen asleep at the wheel.
