(COLOMBO) – The Sri Lankan police have begun a passive probe where a 16-year-old school girl is alleged to have been raped by 22 school boys for over a period of year is Sri Lanka’s Deep southern town of Thanamalwila, officers said on Tuesday.
Thanamalwila is located some 267 kilometers from the commercial capital of Colombo.
The police have already questioned the parents and some of the suspects towards this end, they said.
The police quoted the victim as saying that she was forced to consume liquor before being repeatedly gang-raped by her fellow students for over a period of one year.
The suspects had even blackmailed her by saying that the sex incidents had been recorded and would be uploaded on social media if she failed to comply with their requests.
The incident came to light after the victim became pregnant and was warded at a Government hospital to deliver a baby. Alert hospital staff had later notified the police.
The suspect is a Grade 11 student who had fallen in love with a 19-year-old student who had allegedly lured her into the sex orgies.
Police said the suspects are to be rounded up at the very earliest.
