Colombo, August 13, 2024 — Dilith Jayaweera, the leader of the Mawbima Janatha Party (MJP), has officially entered the race for the 2024 Sri Lankan presidential election. On August 13, Jayaweera submitted his deposit to the Election Commission, signifying his commitment to contest the upcoming poll. The deposit was placed on his behalf by Dr. G. Weerasinghe, Secretary of the Sri Lanka Communist Party.
Jayaweera will be running under the banner of the ‘Sarvajana Balaya’ alliance, represented by the ‘Star’ symbol. This endorsement marks a significant moment for the alliance, which is positioning Jayaweera as a key contender in the election.
During the deposit submission, Jayaweera was accompanied by several prominent figures from the alliance, including MPs Udaya Gammanpila and Gevindu Kumarathunga. Gammanpila expressed strong support for Jayaweera, stating, “He can make the biggest twist in the election. This time, the only candidate for the patriotic forces is Dilith Jayaweera. Therefore, we believe that he will get the votes of everyone who loves the country.”
The decision to nominate Jayaweera was officially announced on August 4 at a convention held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo. The event saw MP Wimal Weerawansa declaring Jayaweera as the Presidential Candidate of the ‘Sarvajana Balaya’ alliance.
As the election approaches, Jayaweera’s campaign is expected to focus on rallying support from patriotic voters and addressing national concerns, positioning himself as a significant player in Sri Lanka’s political landscape.
