Colombo, August 13, 2024 — In a significant development for the 2024 Sri Lankan presidential election, a total of 27 political parties have signed Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with the ‘Samagi Bala Sandhanaya’ (SBS), pledging their support for Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.
The MOUs, finalized today, include endorsements from a diverse coalition of parties such as the United People’s Party, the Democratic People’s Congress, and the National Front, all of which are part of the Human Peoples’ Alliance. These agreements represent a broad consolidation of opposition forces backing Premadasa’s candidacy.
Additionally, the United Left Front, led by President’s Counsel Jayampathy Wickramaratne, has also committed to supporting Premadasa in the presidential race. This endorsement adds further momentum to Premadasa’s campaign, highlighting a unified opposition front against the current government.
The support from these 27 parties is expected to significantly bolster Premadasa’s position as he prepares for the election. The alignment of such a broad coalition indicates a strategic effort to consolidate opposition votes and challenge the incumbent government in the upcoming polls.
