(COLOMBO) – At least 40 independent candidates have registered for Sri Lanka’s upcoming election scheduled for September 21and the bulk of them have been described as proxies for leading contestants.
The registration of candidates ended at 12 noon on Wednesday.
On Tuesday the former Elections Commissioner K. D.Deshapriya described these individuals as mere proxies for some leading candidates, while some were seeking fame, knowing very well that at the end of the day they will fall into the category as ‘also ran’, he said.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission’s office says that a total of 42 complaints have been received within the last 24 hours, pertaining to the 2024 Presidential Election.
Accordingly, 37 complaints were related to election law violations and three other complaints were reported for other reasons.
Among them, 20 complaints were filed with the National Election Complaint Management Centre, and 22 were reported to the District Election Complaint Management Centre.
