Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the National People’s Power (NPP) presidential candidate, has vowed to establish a government dedicated to eradicating drug-related activities and dismantling the underworld in Sri Lanka. During a public rally in Negombo on August 27, Dissanayake highlighted the alarming rise of organized crime in the country, attributing it to the deep connections between criminal networks, drugs, and local politics.
Dissanayake pointed out that while crimes have always existed in Sri Lanka, the emergence of organized crime syndicates is a relatively recent development. He cited examples of how criminal activities are now orchestrated from outside the country, with murders being ordered from Dubai and drug operations managed from within prisons.
According to Dissanayake, the growth of organized crime in Sri Lanka is closely linked to political figures who have enabled these networks to thrive. He emphasized that the relationship between drugs, the underworld, and politics has severely compromised public safety and governance.
Dissanayake assured the public that, if elected, his government would prioritize the suppression of both the drug trade and the underworld, aiming to restore law and order in the country. He urged the people to support his vision, declaring that only a National People’s Power government could effectively tackle these issues and bring about meaningful change.
