In a move aimed at addressing past political appointments, Sri Lanka’s government has given a deadline of December 1, 2024, for all individuals appointed as ambassadors and high commissioners due to political affiliations to return to Sri Lanka. This includes a number of diplomats who were appointed during the previous government’s tenure, many of whom were not experienced in foreign service but were selected based on political connections.
Minister Vijitha Herath, a government spokesperson, revealed that several individuals, including military officers and relatives of politicians, were assigned to key foreign diplomatic positions. These appointments have sparked controversy due to the lack of qualifications and experience in international diplomacy. The minister disclosed that 15 ambassadors and high commissioners are among those recalled.
Minister Herath further emphasized that the government will no longer make such political appointments to diplomatic missions. In the future, only individuals with a background in foreign service will be considered for ambassadorial roles. However, he acknowledged that there might be exceptions for individuals with specific expertise deemed necessary for particular roles.
The government’s decision to recall these appointees marks a shift toward professionalizing Sri Lanka’s foreign diplomatic services.
